Nothing shakes off going winless at the Grammys like immediately performing on "Saturday Night Live," and Alabama Shakes did just that with a pair of soul-cool performances last night.
The Athens, Ala.-based band kicked off the night with "Hold On," off 2012's "Boys & Girls." The slightly slowed down arrangement lent itself to singer Brittany Howard's relaxed presence, but she didn't hold back when it was time to howl the "OOOOOOO" in the song's chorus.
They followed up later with a fiery go at "Always Alright," in which Howard and her Gibson SG took the lead on the head-bobbing track.
The group was up for best rock performance and best new artist category at last week's Grammys. Fellow new artist nominees the Lumineers, Frank Ocean and winners Fun. have all made it "SNL." Only Hunter Hayes is left.
Meanwhile during the show, Ted Nugent stopped by during a "Fox & Friends" sketch to give his first-hand take on President Obama's State of the Union address, which he attended.
However, the Nuge (played by wild-eyed Bill Hader) said he had a hard time sitting still during the speech.
"Partially because of what Obama was saying, and partially because my goatee is full of ticks."
"SNL" returns March 2 with Kevin Hart hosting and "Thrift Shop" owners Macklemore & Ryan Lewis as musical guest.
